What is your communication style?  Understanding Indirect Communicators

In my research I believe there are two distinct communication styles that people have. Last time we talked about the Direct Communicators.

Direct Communicators are people who “Say what they mean-and mean what they say!” You will typically know what a DC is trying to communicate to you because there is no ambiguity or lack of clarity in their communication style. Direct Communicators say “My words are my words!”

Lucy Van Pelt from the Peanuts comic strip is a great example of a Direct Communicator!

What is your communication style? Are you a Direct Communicator?

I was having lunch at an Applebee’s with a friend of mine not too long ago when he said something to the waiter that absolutely mortified me and made me cringe. I was in disbelief when he said what he said and I couldn’t believe that he actually said it-and I told him so too! He simply looked at me and gave me the “So, what?” look and laughed.

I laughed too. If anything magnified the difference between our two communication styles, it was this moment at Applebee’s when the waiter asked us, “So…how was your food?”

My friend looked at the waiter and said, “I’m sorry, but I just wasn’t that impressed with this. It had no flavor. I thought it was going to be a lot better and it wasn’t.”

Winning With People-What Language Are You Speaking??

Have you ever had those moments when you remember something that you’ve said or done, and you suddenly feel VERY embarrassed for yourself, to yourself? I had one of those recently as I remembered a time, many years ago, when I tried speaking “Espanol” in an El Pollo Loco restaurant-and it didn’t go well. At. All.

Let me give you some background….I took two years of high school Spanish when I went to school in California and did pretty well. (Thanks Sra. Menzies!) After I graduated from high school I moved back to my hometown of Honolulu, Hawaii, and over night, I realized that Spanish was NOT a valuable commodity.

You see, I worked in a retail store at that time and because Hawaii has such a large volume of tourists from Japan, understanding the Japanese language is hugely helpful …. and necessary! So, over time I learned enough Japanese to get by in a retail environment and could actually hold my own (well, kind of) in a conversation.

Okay…now back to El Pollo Loco:

The Essentials of Winning With People in 2016!

My pants are a little tight, right now. While I’d love to feign ignorance, I know the reason why … I enjoyed the Christmas season immensely and I may have had one or two extra cookies … a day, since Thanksgiving and now, I must face the fact that those cookies and treats have left their impact on my waistline.

So now, I’ve made a New Year’s resolution to lose five pounds or so through eating healthier and beginning an exercise program. (BTW: I am drinking a veggie/fruit smoothie as I write this!) My guess is that you have your own resolutions too, right?

In addition to your current resolutions, I’d like to propose that you and I go on a journey together throughout 2016.  A journey that will positively impact every part of your life, if you choose to walk this path with me. It’s a journey to improve the quality of the relationships in our life in 2016.
